Cooking At Home With Uncle Ben's Rice

When preparing homemade meals, we face constant tension between making something healthy and balanced, and making food that our kids will actually eat. You know how it goes when you have picky young'ins. It's a fight between something like frozen chicken nuggets instead of a nice wholesome home cooked dinner. I know that my son would prefer to eat those chicken nuggets and french fries every night of the week. Or maybe you have a child who won't touch anything brown from pasta to bread. I have realized that as my son gets older, he's starting to get more and more picky. While I do appreciate that he's trying to be independent, it can give me a huge headache. So, when Uncle Ben's created a new Whole Grain White Rice that looks and tastes like white rice, but has all of the benefits of whole grains, I was stoked.

With the look, taste and texture of white rice, but packed with whole grains (almost a full day's worth in one serving), Uncle Ben's new Whole Grain White Rice provides a healthy alternative to plain sides like pasta or potatoes. The rice comes in a variety of flavors from traditional Long Grain to Chicken, Broccoli Cheddar, Taco Style and Sweet Tomato, so you can mix-up meals and still know that you're getting whole grains on the table. Plus, with a quick 10-minute prep time, Uncle Ben's Whole Grain White Rice provides a great solution for the nights when jam-packed schedules leave you scrambling for a quick, healthy option.

I loved Uncle Ben's new Whole Grain White Rice. My family would eat it with no problems, and my son wasn't picky at all. I even made shrimp fried rice and he loved it!

We were certainly excited to be able to try out Uncle Ben's new Whole Grain White Rice and I will be using it more in the future!

Halls Allergy Relief

This spring has marked one of the worst allergy seasons on record, with people everywhere struggling to control their symptoms. My husband is a severe allergy sufferer and with the high pollen counts this year, he has had to endure itchy, watery eyes, a perpetual runny nose and a stubborn cough.

My husband takes just about every allergy medication in the book. In addition to ramping up his allergy medicine, he has also been taking Halls cough drops. A lot of times his allergy medications only solve the headaches, stuffiness, and watery eyes. They actually cause more of a coughing issue. I have noticed significant improvement in his coughing since using Halls cough drops.

Halls cough drops can complement your medicine and help relieve allergy related sore throat and cough symptoms and even help cool nasal passages. Halls start working within 10 seconds, offering an immediate break while you wait for your allergy medicine to kick in and take over.

My husband is very proactive with his allergy symptom "containment". Everyday he takes his medications prior to having issues and within a few minutes of taking them, he pops a Halls cough drop. That way he can try to stop the coughing before it really starts. Also, after he's done working in the yard, he always takes showers to wash off any allergens.

My husband was stoked to be able to try out Halls cough drops for his allergies. It will become a staple in our house.

Motor Oil Matters + Jiffy Lube Gift Card Giveaway

Did you know that in the United States the average age of cars and light trucks on the roads today has reached a record high of 9.4 years? That means it’s more important than ever to take proper care of your vehicle.

With the informative Web site http://www.motoroilmatters.org/ (created by the maker of industry-leading brands Pennzoil and Quaker State) you can easily locate key information about how quality motor oils can help prolong your engine’s life and improve overall efficiency, as well as help answer other questions you may have about motor oil. In addition, the site offers a fun, educational game for you to play called “M.O.M. Knows Best” where you can put your motor mind to the test with an interactive quiz.

In addition, Ask Patty & Motor Oil Matters have provided a few car care tips to help you improve fuel efficiency.

Pump high-quality gasoline
Ask Patty says that all gasolines are not the same, and no matter what grade of fuel a vehicle requires, it’s important to use a high-quality gasoline. Industry research confirms that a clean engine can result in better fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and overall optimal engine performance. Fortunately, keeping the engine clean of performance-robbing “gunk” helps it perform better. Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines contain a patented cleaning system that not only cleans, but protects critical engine parts against gunk to help improve engine performance as you drive.

Properly inflate tires
Keeping tires in good shape & properly inflated is essential for automotive safety, optimum driving performance and potential cost savings, including better fuel mileage. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the owner’s manual. The U.S. Department of Energy says properly inflated tires can improve gas mileage by around 3.3 percent.

Let the car breathe free
Check that the air filter isn’t clogged. According to the Department of Transportation, replacing a clogged air filter on cars with fuel-injected, computer-controlled gasoline engines can improve acceleration time by around six to 11 percent. This kind of engine is prevalent on most gasoline cars manufactured from the early 1980s onward. Tests suggest that replacing a clogged air filter on an older car with a carbureted engine may improve fuel economy two to six percent under normal replacement conditions or up to 14 percent if the filter is so clogged that it significantly affects drivability.

Regular tune-ups pay off
Before taking a long trip, visit a trusted professional to make sure your car is properly tuned. Depending on the kind of repair and how well it is performed, regular vehicle maintenance can improve gas mileage by an average of four percent, according to the Department of Energy.

Motor oil matters
Having the oil changed regularly is one of the most important things you can do to extend the life of your vehicle’s engine. Changing oil removes contaminants and dirt that may have collected. Premium motor oil, such as Pennzoil or Quaker State, is designed to keep the engine clean and protected. This can maximize fuel efficiency and result in a longer running vehicle.
Taking proper care of your vehicle could potentially save you money in the long run. So take care of your car and take care of it right!
To take care of your car right, I have a $35 Jiffy Lube Gift Card to give away! Wanna win it?
FIRST, tell me how often you change your oil (be honest!)

Healthy Housekeeping with Filtrete + Savings !

As a wife to a man with allergies and a mom to a son with asthma and allergies, I really have to be on my "A" game to make sure we have a very clean house. I have to make sure I cover all areas of my home – including bedding, shower doors and even stuffed animals that can harbor bacteria, mildew and dust mites – proves especially important. Not to mention, that down here in Georgia this spring, we've had had pollen like we've never seen before so it's been even harder than usual. Filtrete helps me out by keeping our air clean with their filters!

Would you believe that when it comes to the routine of cleaning, homeowners tend to be more concerned with stacks of dirty dishes (66 percent), piles of laundry (58 percent) and dust balls on their carpet (57 percent), according to a survey commissioned by 3M, maker of Filtrete air cleaning filters. But they often forget about other areas of the home – such as bedding, shower doors and even stuffed animals – that can be breeding grounds for bacteria, mildew, dust mites and foul odors! Yuck!

In addition to using Filtrete air filters, I am constantly having to vacuum, sweep, mop, ect to make sure that the house is clean. I thought it was great that Healthy Housekeeper Laura Dellutri, author of The Overworked Mom's Stress Free Home Keeping, was able to offer these tips to keep your house clean and help make it healthier in the process:

Start at the Top: Ceiling fans, tall mantles and bookshelves, and the tops of door frames tend to subscribe to the “out of sight, out of mind” motto. These areas often harbor dust, so it’s important to wipe them down regularly to help remove dust buildup. Start at the top and work your way down, collecting all of the dust and dirt that falls to the floor while you’re cleaning.

Wipe Down Windows and Walls: Don't clean windows the old fashioned way – newspaper can cause ink residue and paper towels leave lint behind. Your best bet is to use microfiber cleaning cloths and a professional window squeegee to get a streak-free, spotless shine. To prevent streaks on shower doors and walls, apply lemon oil to the door twice a month. This will help repel soap scum and shampoo, while also adding a nice shine.

Think Horizontally: Dust mites are nearly everywhere. In fact, the American Lung Association estimates that roughly four out of five homes in the United States have detectable levels of dust mite allergen in at least one bed. Reduce dust mites by encasing your mattress and pillows, and wash your bedding in hot water about once a week. Also, since dust mites are microscopic, place strips of duct tape on the mattress case to prevent the dust mites from sneaking through.

Clean the In-between: While cleaning what you can see, don’t forget to clean what you can’t see – the air you breathe. Use a high performance air filter in the home, such as the Filtrete 1” Ultimate Allergen Reduction filter from 3M, to help capture particles such as pollen, smoke, dust mite debris and pet dander from the air that passes through the filter. Be sure to change your filter at the start of every season, or every three months.

Freeze the Fur: Stuffed animals can harbor dust mites so it’s important to pay special attention to them. Place stuffed animals in a large plastic bag and freeze them for four to five hours. Remove them from the freezer and plastic bag, and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove any leftover dust particles.

Finish With Floors: To keep floors in tip-top shape, vacuum and clean them weekly. You can easily make your own floor cleaner by adding a few drops of mild liquid dish detergent to a gallon of water. Hot water can break down floor finishes after time so use water that is barely warm. Finally, don’t forget to clean the floor under large pieces of furniture, which may require you to temporarily move them elsewhere. Corners of rooms and the back of closets often are overlooked, so be sure to clean these areas as well.

Kitchen Clean-Up

Certain areas of the home, especially the kitchen, can breed and harbor germs that not only cause odors but can spread to family members. These low-cost cleaning tasks, when done regularly and properly, can be effective in making the home healthier for your family:

Trashcans: Trashcans should be cleaned monthly using a chlorine bleach and water solution. Simply combine one cup of non-chlorine bleach for every three gallons of water and pour the solution into the trashcan. Swish the solution around in the trashcan, and wait about five minutes for the chlorine to kick in and kill the germs.

Refrigerators: Cleaning the refrigerator monthly will improve the safety and quality of your food. If you are tired of cleaning spills and food particles from your refrigerator, then cover shelves with washable shelf liners. They will catch most of the food spillage, and will make cleanup quicker and easier. Once a month, throw them in the dishwasher for a good cleaning, and then place them back in the refrigerator once they are dry.

Sinks: Since bacteria can accumulate in cracks and crevices, pay extra attention to these areas when disinfecting. Also, stainless steel sinks can be tough to clean and can look spotty due to water spots and lime build up. To keep the sink shiny, use a soft buffing wheel to restore the luster. Then, use a cloth to generously apply mineral oil to the sink. Water will bead up and roll off the sink, keeping it shiny and helping prevent spots.

If you're like me and wanna help make your home healthier this Spring, in addition to following these tips, you can also join the Clean Air Club. By joining the Clean Air Club, you will receive seasonal e-newsletters featuring money-saving offers, filter change reminders, better home living tips and more! Check out www.Filtrete.com!

Free Kroger Reusable Shopping Bag & Giveaway

Running through May 21, Kroger is inviting customers to visit their site where they can enter the 3rd Annual Kroger Reusable Shopping Bag Contest by designing their own reusable grocery bag with Kroger’s easy-to-use design tool. When you sign up and create a bag, Kroger will load a credit to your card for a free bag.

Upon submitting their entry, designers will receive a confirmation e-mail allowing them to view their final design and send to family and friends. Visitors to the site can vote on their favorite designs. The top 10 designs will be chosen by an expert panel and the grand prize winner will receive $1,000 and will have their bag design sold in stores. Four finalists will receive $250 Kroger gift cards and five runners-up will receive $100 Kroger gift cards. Every Shopper’s Card holder who submits a design will receive a credit for a free reusable shopping bag.

Additionally, they have partnered with Café Press so that after participants submit their design, they have the option of purchasing a reusable canvas bag with their design on it.

New this year, they have added the ability to create groups. Participants can now recruit friends to design a bag and be a part of a special group; a great feature for schools, churches, neighborhoods and more!
