Exergen Temporal Scanner Review & Giveaway (closed)

Talk about being a bad mamma jamma. The Exergen Temporal Scanner rocks! I cannot tell you how much easier my life has been since we got it! If your kids get sick, you need this!

So what is the Exergen Temporal Scanner? Here it is straight from the horse's mouth:

“The Temporal Scanner Thermometer is a totally non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements. Advanced, patented technology measures temperatures with a gentle stroke across the forehead.

With a gentle stroke of the forehead it captures the naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery, taking 1,000 readings per second, selecting the most accurate. With its patented Arterial Heat Balance system the TemporalScanner measures ambient temperatures, mathematically replaces the small temperature loss from cooling at the skin, and displays an accurate arterial temperature.

Since my son is in daycare, he gets sick pretty often during the winter. This winter was nothing different. What I loved about this thermometer is, whenever I thought he was getting sick, I could just swipe it across his forehead first thing in the morning without waking him up. That helped me in two ways. 1. I didn't have to worry about waking up and dealing with a sick cranky baby and 2. I could find out soon enough so DH or I could make plans for staying home from work. I know we all know what a pain it can be to drop your child off at school only to walk into the office just to turn back around and pick them back up because they're sick.

What I did not realize was that the Exergen Temporal Scanner is more accurate than ear thermometers. Prior to this, we had been using the ear thermometer for the same reason, it was still somewhat easier to use than the mouth or rectal thermometers. Why is Exergen's more accurate? Because it senses the arterial temperature. The arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart therefore making it the best determinate of body temperature. So for obvious reasons, the Exergen Temporal Scanner is a better choice. Of course, it's just like any other thermometer, it will give you skewed numbers if you do not use it correctly, so just make sure you read the directions to know exactly where to swipe on your child's head.

I love it and I know you will too. It is a little pricey ($50) however it is comparable to your other ear thermometers. For me, a good thermometer is nothing to fudge on because I can tell you there were times I had thermometers tell me DS didn't have a fever when he did. A plus side to the cost though, Exergen is offering a $5 rebate from your purchase. You can click here for details on that and to see where it's sold. Click here for the rebate coupon

I think this thermometer is so great, that I'm giving one away! Now you too can enjoy the ease of taking your child's temperature!

This will make my life so much easier because its hard to take my 2 yr old son's temp with a regular digital thermometer. My husband works in the medical field and last time our son had a fever, hubby was talking about a rectal reading because its the most accurate. Ummm no thanks!

Awesome! Have always wondered how accurate those were! It's been on my baby registry for over a year but I never did get one! My son HATES getting his temp taken the regular ways, so I'd love to win this!

Lizzie April 2, 2009 3:35 PM

With (soon-to-be) 4 kids, this will definitely make my life easier! It's so time-consuming to take temperatures when there is more than one child sick. You have to clean the oral thermometer in between & then you're never sure if it's accurate because your kids can't keep their mouths closed on it, etc.

Thanks for an awesome giveaway. :)

Satsuki Rebel April 3, 2009 9:11 AM

Right now my babe and I are sick. She's at that weird in-between toddler stage. She hates having a thermometer jabbing under her arm, she's too old for rectal, and she won't hold one in her mouth. We're pretty much temperature-less here. It would be nice to be able to change that.

Ana Diaz April 3, 2009 9:42 AM

This will make my life sooo much easier! I have a 4 month baby and I'm always worried that she's sick but I hate taking her temperature it's so hard cause she wiggles so much and I don't want to hurt her. I have a 5 year old boy too and well he hates the whole getting checked by mom. Well thanks awesome giveaway and congrats on winning the DeezTees Giveaway on FrugaliciousMommy.com.

My kids can't stand sitting still long enough to have their temperature taken with a regular thermometer and the ear one never seems to be consistent. My Dr office uses one and it was quick.

This thing is the best investment I ever made! I had babies that wouldn't do the rectal, wouldn't do the pacifier temp gage, and had two sick babies.... They don't flinch, they love to read the numbers. I was just telling my husband last night that although pricey, this was one of the best things we ever bought.

HeatherC April 4, 2009 3:16 PM

How great would this be! I never even knew it existed! :) My life would become so much easier simply because it would eliminate the "old" way (Yep- you know the one I mean) Blech!

Oh my WOW! Just today I tried taking our sons temperature because he's teething, he wouldn't let me put it in his ear then the 2 year old wants me to check her temperature, both ears lol, and then do it again just to make sure I did it right, yep shes super bossy, never did get to check son's temp. Think I will have to do it sneaky while he sleeps. And that is why it would make my life easier.

I am following, subscribing and PRAYING to win this! I would LOVE to win this! My daughter was born with autonomic dysfunction (among other things) which means her body has a hard time regulating its own temperature. The other day she was outside playing... she was blood red and burning up and her temp read 94 in the ear. I rushed her to the Dr. where it again read just under 95. Its dangerous for her temperature to be out of control. I feel like I cannot trust the ear thermo on her! This would give me a LOT of peace of mind!

Thank you for the GREAT giveaway!

I would love to not be embarrassed at the doctor when he asks how high my (2 year old)son's temperature is...I have yet to really be able to take his temperature normally....I've tried underarm but it's not as accurate and so hard to get him to hold still long enough.

Jess April 6, 2009 1:01 PM

This would be wonderful w/ 4 kids. The bigger ones never want to keep the thermometer in their mouths long enough, and I have to fight my 2/yo to keep it under his arm.

Michelle April 6, 2009 2:13 PM

I've got 4 kids aged 8 to almost 1. My ear thermometer is worthless, and it's so hard to get any of them to sit still long enough to take it with the regular thermometer. This would be great!

Blakesmom April 6, 2009 3:22 PM

I won't have to hold him down to get his temp with this one! I always get two different temps with the one I have now which makes it hard to tell what the correct temp is. Thanks for the chance.

One Frugal Girl April 6, 2009 9:18 PM

Right now they range in age from 6 months to 11 years, and we have 3 different thermometers: a rectal, one for under the arm, and one for in the mouth. What a pain! We have 5 kids, 2 of whom are newly adopted from Ethiopia. The four year old, in particular, HATES the thermometor coming at him because he thinks it's more shots (that's all he's had since he got here!). Since he doesn't speak English yet we can't explain to him well enough that it won't hurt. With 5 kids and germs we brought back from Ethiopia all seven of us have been sick for 6 weeks now! We're solely keeping our pharmacy in business. I need to move from one "patient" to the next with the speed this baby would give me!

This would definitely make things 100% easier when it comes to getting their temps.

Would love to win! My 4 year old daughter aspirates on thin liquids and is prone to developing pneumonia. She is so tiny and when I take her temp under her arm it is always much lower than when taken rectally. Now that she is 4 she refuses a rectal temp and I don't blame her, but they are the only way we get accurate readings and then know it is time to start treating the aspiration pneumonia. Wow, what an awesome giveaway! royccrain@yahoo.com

I have teens and older children with grandchildren. My daughter in law is a first time mother and the first month of my grandsons life she took his temp daily. She carries a thermometer in her purse.
My daughter who is 17 wants to be a pedeatric surgeon and says they no longer use rectal or mouth for temps. So with my grandsons visiting this would be so nice to have at home even my husband could actually read it correctly.

It will be so much easier to take temperatures and much quicker too. Also easier to find than a tiny digital thermometer

I would like to try this because I have noticed that even after washing a load of clothes that they still smell musty and old. I have tried running bleach through and it doesn't work so I would love to try this.

The temporal scanner would make my life easier, since I can't find my old ear thermometer! Thanks for the chance to win.

No one likes their temperature taken. With an accurate reading the first time their might be less complaints.
